Venice or Venezia is a city in northern Italy, the capital of the region Veneto. It is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful cities in the world.The city stretches across 118 small islands in the marshy Venetian Lagoon along the Adriatic Sea in northeast Italy. The saltwater lagoon stretches along the shoreline between the mouths of the Po (south) and the Piave (north) Rivers. The name Venice connected with the people known as the Veneti, perhaps the same as the Eneti mentioned by Homer. The meaning of the word is uncertain. Connections with the Latin verb 'venire' (to come) or (Slo)venia are fanciful. A connection with the Latin word venetus, meaning 'sea-blue', is possible.
